A music release (or simply a release) is an artist's creative output available for sale or distribution. The term can also be attributed directly to the publication or publication of musical material.

Music releases have a number of characteristics by which they are classified:
In general, a music release has a name, date and geography of publication, author, performer, and sometimes other persons involved in the creation and preparation of materials (for example, producer, sound engineer, in the case of video release — director) are also indicated. In addition, additional information is the date and place of recording (often an audio studio). Music releases are created and distributed using labels (the release is assigned a number in the label's catalog and a barcode), as well as on its own (the release, in this case, is marked with the expression "Self-Released" or "Self-published"). Magnetoalbums, for example, relate to the second case.

The release can be published on various physical (informational) media, as well as in non-material ways, for example, on radio, television or the Internet. The variety and number of physical media depends on the total duration of the release. In the simplest case, the release consists of one medium. A double release or triple release consists of two or three media, respectively; a box set is a set of several (usually more than two) media in a common package. However, the number of media is not a direct consequence of the total duration of the release. For example, the British version of The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour is a mini-album with a total duration of 19:12, published on two 7" (45 rpm) records. Dunedin Double EP, a sampler of the Flying Nun Records label, consists of two 12" (45 rpm) records with a total duration of 49:45. Unlike The Beatles album, the sampler consists of two mini-albums and slightly exceeds the duration of the average album.
