With the introduction of the Swachh Bharat Mission in 2014, emphasis was given to eradicating open defecation, improving living conditions and achieving universal sanitation. The main emphasis in this was on installing public washrooms in every area to eradicate open defecation. Installing public washrooms will not be beneficial if they are not properly infrastructure. Factors That Affect the Progress of Sanitation in India
The progress of sanitation in India is still not as smooth sailing as assumed. Some factors affect this progress, let’s get to know them:
- No Toilet Infrastructure - The number one issue or factor that is stopping or hurdling the progress of sanitation in India is the toilet infrastructure. Water shortage is the major reason for this. Rural areas where the need for toilets is high do not have a proper water supply. Furthermore, even the system for sewage is not functional in rural areas.
- Social Stigma in Cleaning the Washrooms - As we know the sewage system is not functional or properly applied in rural areas then the problem of how to take care of the decomposed feces in the public washrooms. When people are hired for this they are treated badly by the other people. Why? Because of linking everything to the caste system. This social stigma is another issue for sanitation progress.
- No Smooth Community Awareness - The last factor that affects the sanitation progress in India is that the people here are not ready to accept using washrooms. Yes, most people still encourage open defecation. Not just in rural areas, but also in metro cities. Therefore, a smooth community awareness is necessary for sanitation.
