MMOexp – Elden Ring: How to Unravel Fia’s Story and Enter the Duskborn Era

Elden Ring is rich with characters, stories, and choices that shape your journey through the Lands Between. Among the many NPCs with deep, winding questlines is Fia, the mysterious Deathbed Companion who offers to hold you early in the game. What might seem like a small gesture evolves into a major subplot, ultimately granting players access to one of the game’s alternate endings.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through Fia’s full questline, from your first encounter with her in the Roundtable Hold to Elden Ring Items unlocking the Mending Rune of the Death-Prince and the Age of Duskborn ending.
Who is Fia?
Fia is a Deathbed Companion who resides in Roundtable Hold. Her role is cryptic, and her motivations are initially unclear. What starts as a gentle offer to “hold you” soon turns into a deep, lore-heavy journey tied to death, rebirth, and one of the game's many endings.
How to Start Fia’s Quest
Fia appears in Roundtable Hold and offers to hold the player, granting the consumable Baldachin’s Blessing. This item temporarily boosts poise and damage negation but slightly reduces max HP until used. You must let Fia hold you at least once to begin her quest.
Alternatively, if you ignore her until later in the game, she will eventually move to Deeproot Depths, where her quest continues.
Getting the Weathered Dagger
After you’ve acquired two Great Runes, return to Roundtable Hold and let Fia hold you again. She’ll give you the Weathered Dagger, asking that you return it to its rightful owner.
Speak to D, Hunter of the Dead, in the Hold and hand over the dagger. Then, rest at a Site of Grace.
After resting, head to the room beyond Blacksmith Hewg and you’ll find D dead, with Fia standing over his body. Loot D’s corpse for the Twinned Armor and Bell Bearing, and speak to Fia again. She’ll share more of her story and then vanish.
The Carian Inverted Statue and the Cursemark of Death
To continue, you need the Carian Inverted Statue, which you can obtain by progressing Ranni’s questline. Specifically, you’ll get it after giving Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade found in Nokron.
Use the statue at the Carian Study Hall to invert it and access the Divine Tower of Liurnia. At the top, you’ll find the Cursemark of Death—an essential item to continue Fia’s storyline.
Give the Twinned Armor to D’s Brother
Head to Siofra Aqueduct, north of Nokron. There, you'll find D’s brother sitting silently on a balcony. Give him D’s Twinned Armor to trigger later events. He’ll vow to avenge his brother and attempt to kill Fia.
Don’t worry—you can retrieve the armor later.
How to Reach Deeproot Depths and Defeat Fia’s Champions
To reach Fia again, continue in the Siofra Aqueduct and defeat the Valiant Gargoyles. After the fight, a coffin at the back of the arena will teleport you to Deeproot Depths.
Climb through the roots and branches until you reach the Across the Roots Site of Grace. Here, you’ll enter a large arena and face Fia’s Champions—a series of duels that culminate in a group fight. Once defeated, you can speak with Fia again.
Giving Fia the Cursemark of Death
Talk to Fia and choose to let her hold you. Speak to her in secret, exhaust her dialogue, and give her the Cursemark of Death. She’ll thank you and grant you the Radiant Baldachin’s Blessing.
After resting, speak to her again to trigger the Deathbed Dream.
Fight Lichdragon Fortissax
In the Deathbed Dream, you’ll battle Lichdragon Fortissax, a powerful lightning dragon. Defeating it rewards you with the Remembrance of the Lichdragon.
When you return, Fia will appear dead. Loot her body to acquire the Mending Rune of the Death-Prince.
Aftermath and Final Rewards
Return to the site and you’ll find D’s brother now wearing D’s gear. He has killed Fia. After resting once more, D’s brother disappears, leaving behind:
Fia’s Armor
Twinned Armor
Inseparable Greatsword
Unlocking the Age of Duskborn Ending
At the end of the game, after defeating the final boss, use the Mending Rune of the Death-Prince to unlock the Age of Elden Ring Runes buy Duskborn ending. This unique conclusion envisions a world where death becomes a natural part of life once again, breaking the immortality curse that pervades the Lands Between.
Final Thoughts
Fia’s quest is one of Elden Ring’s most rewarding side stories, filled with mystery, emotional weight, and meaningful decisions. Completing it not only grants powerful lore items and gear but also unlocks an entirely new way to end your journey.
So, the next time Fia offers to hold you… maybe don’t say no.
