Range and performance could get a boost
The Tesla Model Y is due its first major update in 2025. The popular electric SUV – which was the best-selling car in the world in 2023 – will follow in the footsteps of the smaller Model 3, which received its ‘Highland’ facelift in September 2023.
Tesla hasn’t confirmed any details of the Model Y’s ‘Juniper’ update, or revealed it publicly, but a camouflaged model has now been spotted testing on the streets of Spain. You can expect the facelifted Model Y to undergo a similar update to the Model 3, which would mean sleeker styling, improved material quality, a more minimalist interior and possible performance and range updates.
Tesla’s named updates are more major and akin to traditional facelifts within the automotive industry, but the firm is always keen to stress that with constant over-the-air improvements and refinements applied during a model year, its models get incrementally better over time.
It’s also possible that Tesla will take the opportunity to rectify some issues with the Model Y brought to light by customer complaints, such as firm suspension, or add features such as vehicle-to-load introduced with the Tesla Cybertruck.
Tesla Model Y facelift spotted testing
Spy shots of the new Model Y don’t reveal too much information, as the car is heavily camouflaged. However, it’s obvious that no major changes have been made to the car’s body, which is the same shape as before.
The camouflaged front end appears to hide a new headlight arrangement – we’d expect slimmer units in line with those fitted to the latest Model 3, or potentially a Cybertruck-aping full-width lightbar. You can see our predictions in our exclusive render, below.
It’s a similar story around the back, where the silhouette of redesigned light clusters can be seen – but in no great detail.
The camouflaged car wears familiar 20-inch alloy wheels and is shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres – these make it clear that this is the standard Model Y, as the hot Model Y Performance model wears wider tyres at the rear.
New Tesla Model Y Juniper price and release date
Getting a definitive release date out of Tesla for a new car is always tricky, but it’s looking like the new Model Y will come sometime in 2025 – more than a year after the new Model 3’s debut.
As for price, Tesla shocked the car industry by actually making the new Model 3 cheaper than the car it replaced. If the Model Y follows the same trend, it could start from around £42,000.
New Tesla Model Y Juniper design
There aren’t likely to be any surprises with the new Tesla Model Y’s design, you can expect to see very similar styling to the updated Model 3 which was revealed last year. The Carwow team has taken a crack at rendering the new car to get an idea of what it’ll look like.
Current Model Y (top) vs facelifted Model Y (bottom)
It has much slimmer headlights and a less fussy lower bumper, making it look less bloated and fish-like than before. Plenty of other renders of the rear end have also appeared online.
A photo was leaked earlier this year of a Model Y prototype showing a full-width light bar across the boot lid, and you can bet that the new car will have similar C-shaped LED tail lights to the Model 3.
New Tesla Model Y Juniper interior and infotainment
While there are no pictures of the new Model Y’s cabin, it’ll be no surprise to find a very similar layout to the new Model 3. The two cars are pretty much identical under the skin after all.
Expect a similar interior design to the new Model 3 (pictured)
This means it’ll have the same minimalist layout, with just a massive central touchscreen to control most of the car’s functions. The steering column stalks could also disappear in favour of buttons on the steering wheel.
New Tesla Model Y Juniper batteries and range
The updated Tesla Model 3 retained the same range of battery options as the outgoing car, so you aren’t likely to see any major changes to the Model Y’s offerings when it comes to market.
See what’s new for the Tesla Model 3…
The current car comes with either a 57.5kWh or a 75kWh battery, the same as in the new Model 3, with the long-range model managing up to 373 miles on a charge. The new Model 3 got some aerodynamic tweaks to further boost its range, something which could be applied to this SUV.
