Joe Russo Says Robert Downey Jr. Is Researching and “Writing Backstory” for Doctor Doom Role: “He Is So Dialed In”
After over a decade of playing the ‘ leader and protagonist (Tony Stark), is getting ready to trade in his hero status for a darker venture, playing Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom (Victor Von Doom) in two upcoming Marvel films.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Joe and , co-directors of the last two Avengers movies, were asked how it was to reunite with Downey, for and how he’s preparing for the role.
“It’s a very intense process developing the character,” Joe said. “He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in.”

He continued, “[Downey’s] writing backstory, costume ideas … I think he just loves really rich, three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”
In July, Downey surprised the crowd at by taking off his mask onstage to reveal that he would play Doctor Doom. Fans thought Downey’s time in the was over after Iron Man’s death in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
However, Downey addressed the Comic-Con audience, saying, “New mask, same task.” Joe, who was also onstage, added, “If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he is one of the more complex characters in all of comics … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”
Doctor Doom was previously played by Joseph Culp in 1994’s unreleased The Fantastic Four, by Julian McMahon in 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and by Toby Kebbell in 2015’s bomb, Fantastic Four.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated to come out in May 2026. The follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, is looking at a May 2027 release.
