MAC Just Dropped Two New Versions of Its Iconic Lipglass...but Are They Better Than the OG?

Everyone remembers their first lip gloss. And no, I’m not talking about strawberry-flavored Lip Smackers or a glittery lip balm from Claire’s. I’m talking about your first Big Girl lip gloss. Mine was MAC’s iconic Lipglass. The juicy, mirror-like shine it gave my lips was everything to me. I’d swipe it on my lips and then, in typically 2010s fashion, smudge a whittled-down eyeliner into my waterline and layer on a few coats of Maybelline Great Lash. As of last week, the lip gloss that defined my and my peer’s teen makeup years just dropped two new versions of the iconic formula: Lipglass Air and Lipglass Blow. Lip gloss as a category is majorly trending right now—not to mention MAC is in its revival era with hot campaigns and celebrity fans like Chappell Roan and Julia Fox, so it’s no surprise that the brand has decided to capitalize on the momentum.Naturally, I had to put these new Lipglass formulas to the test to see if they live up to the OG’s legacy. Keep scrolling for my full review of the MAC Lipglass Air and MAC Lipglass Blow plus pics of the new formulas.MAC Lipglass Air:MAC Lipglass AirPrice: $25Shades: 10 (9 tints plus a clear)MAC’s Lipglass Air is like the lighter, fresher version of the OG Lipglass—think: tinted lip oil vibes with a lil side of plumping. The formula feels more lightweight than the original and swaps out heavy pigment for a more subtle wash of color. When I first applied it, I felt a light tingle, but it faded fast and didn’t give me any burning sensations or that diabolical red ring around my lips. The finish is super glassy and wearable, although it boasts more shine than pigment. If you want more color payoff, the deeper shades—like the reds and browns—deliver bolder hues in just one swipe (peep the pics below). Otherwise, I’d layer this over a lip stain or lipstick if you’re looking for more opacity. Basically, the effect Lipglass Air gives is your lips but glowier, juicier, and waaaay more hydrated.Jasmine Hyman for CosmopolitanI mean look at that shine...I’m not the only one singing the praises of the new Lipglass Air. “The new formula glides on so smoothly and gives the perfect touch of color,” says fellow Cosmo staffer Tori Polizzotto. “Sometimes I just want a subtle hint of color and this gives me exactly that, plus it makes my lips feel hydrated and soft all day long.”MAC Lipglass Blow:MAC Lipglass BlowIf you’re into the look of pillow, plump, ultra-full lips, Lipglass Blow is about to be your new bestie. It only comes in clear, so it’s more of a topper rather than a solo lip product (like the OG Lipglass in Clear), but layered over your fave lip liner or lip stain? Chef’s kiss. It instantly amps up shine and gives temporary volume courtesy of a cocktail of ginger root extract and cooling menthol crystals (it’s definitely tingly, so don’t be surprised if you feel some stinging). The big takeaway for me with Lipglass Blow is that unlike most lip plumpers I’ve tried, this didn’t make my lips feel all dry and chapped by the end of the day. The combo of conditioning plant oils in the formula really moisturizes like a lip balm or lip mask, so you’re getting the benefits of a plumper and treatment all in one.Final thoughts:Okay, these are definitely a fresher and newer take on MAC’s original Lipglass. Lipglass Blow is an effective plumper, but I don’t think it would be a regular in my routine unless I’m in desperate need of some lip volume. Lipglass Air, on the other hand? A new holy grail for me. While it doesn’t have the same pigment power as the formula of our youth, the formula is more hydrating and glossy and offers a more modern lip look. As a makeup minimalist, I love when my products do the most, so I’ll be opting for the Lipglass Air for nourishing benefits, a touch of pink, and an extra-shiny finish. Why trust Cosmopolitan?Jasmine Hyman is the assistant beauty editor at Cosmopolitan where she writes about all types of makeup from acne-safe foundation to shimmery lip gloss.
