‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Season 17 Will Premiere With the One Episode We’ve Been Waiting For
After an excruciatingly long hiatus, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is finally set to return this summer by showing us the dark scheme Dennis was pulling behind the scenes while his friends were busy messing up an entire school week.On July 19, 2023, FXX aired the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 16 finale, “Dennis Takes a Mental Health Day,” a heartwarming and heart-eating episode based on Glenn Howerton’s real-life rage fantasies about murdering Elon Musk. At the time, the widely beloved Always Sunny Podcast was about to hit its peak, Rob McElhenney’s bromance and sports partnership with Ryan Reynolds hadn’t yet pissed off the more irate members of the Always Sunny fanbase and Howerton’s performance in the Hulu dramedy BlackBerry was racking up awards nominations from various trade organizations.Flash forward to 2025: The Always Sunny podcast is dead, Reynolds is almost as large a part of McElhenney’s life as Kaitlin Olson, and, at long last, we finally know when the next episode of Always Sunny will air. This July 9th, FXX will premiere It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17, starting with the second half of the Always Sunny/Abbott Elementary crossover that began on ABC back in January. Don't Miss Summer vacation in West Philly will feature a trip to hell. In barely 30 seconds of new footage, FX Networks blessed Always Sunny and Abbott Elementary fans with a series of sensational new developments on the second half of the crosstown crossover, which, as both Always Sunny and Abbott Elementary producers have confirmed, will tell the Gang’s side of the story from their week performing court-ordered community service at the underserved Philadelphia public school. First off, we see that the Gang’s instincts to constantly steal from every new place they visit is still intact, as the group chows down on donuts from the teacher’s lounge and Mac, who spent the first half of the crossover kissing Principal Ava Coleman’s ass and happily performing every task she hands him, swipes a brownie straight off of a kid’s lunch tray. Then, the most exciting reveal — the Gang is trying to form a boyband out of students at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. Given Mac, Charlie, Dennis and Dee’s historic love for Boyz II Men, it comes as no surprise that, in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17, Motown Philly’s back again. As for the rest of Always Sunny Season 17 past the highly anticipated premiere, the official logline is even more promising than the above clip. In what FXX is dubbing “The Gang Embraces The Corporate Era,” the sitcom will explore “how greed and the New American Dream have consumed Paddy’s Pub.” “They’ll exploit cross-network promotion to increase market share; they’ll scapegoat one of their own to avoid a PR backlash; they’ll risk everything for a handshake with the Saudis; they’ll bend the laws with side hustles to pad their pockets; and they’ll change everything about themselves to appeal to a broader audience," the logline promises. “And sure, like any corporate goon, the Gang craves money and parasitic social privileges. That’s been plain since 2005. But they’re also human beings. They crave love.. respect… conditional freedom… constant adulation… histrionic amounts of attention… non-stop gratification… and unfiltered, slaphappy eroticism.“In Season 17, they’ll chase down them all.”
