Matthew Gray Gubler’s New CBS Show Delayed To 2026 A Week After Receiving Series Order

Matthew Gray Gubler's upcoming CBS show Einstein has been delayed. The upcoming show will see Gubler playing Albert Einstein's great-grandson, Lewis, who begins helping a local police detective, Veronica "Ronni" Salazar (Rosa Salazar), with solving particularly baffling cases. It is based on the German show of the same name and is being adapted by Monk creator Andy Breckham, along with executive producer and director Randy Zisk, who previously worked on many Monk episodes.
According to TVLine, Einstein has been delayed until the 2026-2027 television season because there are currently too many shows in the works at CBS and there was not enough room in the 2025-2026 schedule. It was determined that it would be beneficial for Einstein to spend more time in pre-production for the time being. The update comes one week after CBS issued a series order for Einstein, and after the network had made attempts in previous years to adapt the police procedural.
What This Means For Einstein
It Is Delayed, But Still Moving Forward
Einstein's latest update may seem like another setback for the show that CBS has been trying to develop since 2019, but it is not too concerning. The 2025-2026 schedule being at capacity is a good sign for CBS and ensures that there will be no shortage of content in the coming year. In the meantime, the network is not changing its decision about issuing a series order for Einstein, which is still moving forward, only with a longer period in the pre-production phase.
Breckham, Zisk, and the rest of the show's creative team now have more time to develop the show before production begins and without the pressure of having it ready to premiere in fall 2025.
The police procedural now has an opportunity to take its time and ensure that the series lives up to its German predecessor and to the expectations surrounding a show featuring Criminal Minds' Gubler. Some of the shows lined up for CBS' 2025 season will likely not make it to the 2026 season while Einstein is already guaranteed to have a spot there. Breckham, Zisk, and the rest of the show's creative team now have more time to develop the show before production begins and without the pressure of having it ready to premiere in fall 2025.
Our Take On Einstein's Delay
It Does Not Change The Anticipation Surrounding The Show
While I was looking forward to seeing Criminal Minds' Gubler starring in Einstein this fall, the delay is not too worrisome. Given all the time that has been spent on the CBS adaptation, another year will not make too much of a difference, especially if this time is used to make sure that the show is done well. Beyond being a police procedural, Einstein has been teased to feature a strong sense of humor. Making sure the humor and other aspects of the show work will make it worth the wait.
