Tyler, TX - The Tyler Police Department has released bodycam footage after a woman grabbed an officer’s firearm and discharged it during an altercation on Sunday afternoon.According to a release from the department, officers responded to a theft at Dollar General on Gentry Parkway on Sunday at around 2:09 p.m., where officers located two suspects nearby. While one complied with officers, another person, identified as Brianna Erwin, walked away and resisted when ordered to stop.“Erwin was informed that she was detained and not free to leave…Erwin turned her back to me and began to step away, which is when I attempted to grab her wrists in an attempt to place her into handcuffs. Erwin escalated to twisting her body to loosen my grasp on her and began running away, at which point she tripped and was eventually able to be placed into handcuffs.”In bodycam footage, an officer is heard saying, “Let go of my gun” before the gun discharged. In a statement from the police department, officials said an officer used a closed-hand strike on Erwin to avoid further escalation.“[The officer] advised Erwin grabbed for his holstered service pistol and somehow got her finger into the trigger guard with the pistol in the holster,” the affidavit said. “I observed damage to the bottom of the holster where the round came out.”Tyler PD released 7 seconds of the bodycam footage. Before being transported, Erwin claimed to be pregnant and was looked at by Tyler Fire EMTs before being taken to the Smith County Jail, where medical staff conducted a secondary evaluation.Abbott seeks stricter bail laws after East Texas murder suspect escapes while under house arrestMugshot of Brianna Nicole Erwin, courtesy of Smith County Jail
