Venezuela strikes live updates: Nicolas Maduro ‘captured’ after Trump confirms bombings in Caracas

Members of the US Congress and Senate have responded to the Trump administration’s attack on Venezuela, condemning the president for the “illegal” strikes, and claiming he conducted the operation without consultation or authorisation by Congress.

Republican Congressman Jim McGovern wrote on X:“Without authorisation from Congress, and with the vast majority of Americans opposed to military action, Trump just launched an unjustified, illegal strike on Venezuela.”

Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury wrote: “The White House is confirming the US military operations in Venezuela tonight. Let’s be clear: these strikes are illegal. The president does not have the authority to declare war or undertake large-scale military operations without Congress. Congress must act to rein him in. Immediately.”

Iraq War veteran and Arizonian senator Ruben Gallego said in a post on X that regardless of the outcome, the US would be held morally responsible for starting an “unjustified” war.

He wrote: “I fought in some of the hardest battles in the Iraq war. Saw my brothers die, saw civilians being caught in the crossfire, all for an unjustified war. No matter the outcome, we are in the wrong for starting this war in Venezuela.”
