Valve has just launched Proton 11.0-beta1, the latest version of its compatibility layer for gamers on Steam Deck and Linux. With this update, players get access to a massive wave of Capcom and Konami classics from the 90s. This preservation of gaming history makes Steam Deck a more compelling choice for gamers who want to play classics from 30 years ago.
The new games now supported include:
Now playable (previously worked with Proton Experimental): Universe Generator: The Golden Sword DCS World Steam Edition Resident Evil (1996) Resident Evil 2 (1998) Dino Crisis Dino Crisis 2 From Dust Blaite Don't Die Dateless, Dummy! METAL GEAR SURVIVE Warhammer: Vermintide 2 Metal Fatigue SHOGUN: Total War Newly playable: Unknown Faces Gothic 1 Classic X-Plane 12 Breath of Fire IV Deadly PremonitionAside from new games, this update brings tons of fixes, including for issues caused by third-party updates from EA and Rockstar. It’d be interesting to know whether compatibility was broken on purpose or not.
Another notable detail in the release notes is the inclusion of FEX-2604 and ARM64EC builds, suggesting that Valve wants games to run natively on ARM architecture. There are also updates of Xalia which bring support for gamepad bindings to installers and launchers for titles like BioShock and Final Fantasy X, making life easier for handheld players.
The new version of Proton may be available already in the Steam settings.
