With the ongoing component shortages, not even virtual reality headsets are safe from price hikes. Today, Meta announced that it will be raising the price of its latest Quest line of VR headsets on April 19, with even refurbished units being affected. It said the global surge in prices for memory chips is the reason for this change.
"We’re making this change because the cost of building high-performance VR hardware has risen significantly. The global surge in the price of critical components — specifically memory chips — is impacting almost every category of consumer electronics, including VR," said Meta, explaining the decision. "To keep delivering the quality of hardware, software, and support you expect from the Quest platform, we need to adjust our pricing."
The budget-focused Meta Quest 3S variants, which come in 128GB and 256GB flavors, are going up in price by $50. Meanwhile, the standard Meta Quest 3 is getting the biggest price jump, with it now costing $100 more than at launch. Find the complete changes for the US market below:
New Old Delta Meta Quest 3S (128GB) $400.00 $350.00 $50 Meta Quest 3S (256GB) $450.00 $400.00 $50 Meta Quest 3 (512GB) $600.00 $500.00 $100While Meta Quest refurbished units will be seeing similar price hikes, the company confirmed that all accessories will stay at their current prices. A breakdown of the new prices for regions other than the US can be found in the announcement page over here.
"Meta remains committed to investing in VR and leading the category because we believe this is the future of computing," added the company. "We have a long-term roadmap full of new hardware and experiences, and this adjustment helps us stay on track to deliver that future."
Meta isn't the only VR hardware maker facing issues with component shortages. Valve was supposed to launch its first wireless virtual reality headset, the Steam Frame, in early 2026 alongside the new Steam Machine and Steam Controller. However, none of the hardware has a release date or prices attached yet due to important parts being hard to come by.
