The Munster Senior Hurling Championship is an unforgiving arena. Clare know this better than anyone after failing to progress to the knockout stage last season when they were defending All-Ireland champions.
Waterford haven’t reached the knockout stages since the group format came in back in 2018, although they did reach the Munster final in 2020 when it reverted temporarily to a straight knockout.
The Banner won the Division 1B League title while the Déise were relegated from the top flight.
There’s certainly a sense that Limerick, Cork and Tipperary are ahead of both these teams in the provincial pecking order. Therefore, there’s no real room for error for either team ahead of their Munster SHC opener.
