Whether you’re hoping to spark a new connection or deepen an existing one, asking thoughtful questions is a great place to start. As psychotherapist Dr. Noah Kass, LCSW, puts it, “These questions open doors.” They create space for conversations that don’t always come up naturally—like family dynamics, self-perception, and what love really means.
But how you ask matters.
“Yes-or-no questions can quickly shut down a conversation,” Kass says. “Instead, you want to create a space where honesty feels safe. Those questions only scratch the surface, revealing words but not the thoughts and emotions behind them. Open-ended questions, on the other hand, invite deeper reflection—and that’s what helps relationships grow.”
To help you connect on a more meaningful level, we’ve put together 100 questions for couples to start the conversation.
