Emirati academic says UAE no longer needs US protection; bases a burden, not an asset

An Emirati academic has called for a reassessment of the United States’ military presence in the UAE, arguing that the country no longer needs direct American protection due to its growing defence capabilities.

Dr Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a political science professor, said in remarks reported by Reuters that the UAE had demonstrated its ability to defend itself efficiently during the recent Iranian attack without relying on foreign forces. He stressed that the current phase requires serious consideration of the future of US military bases on Emirati soil.

He added: “The UAE no longer needs America to defend it. It has proven during the Iranian attack that it is capable of defending itself effectively. What the UAE needs is to acquire the best and most advanced weapons the US has. Therefore, it is time to think about closing the American bases, as they have become a burden rather than a strategic asset.”

Abdulla also warned that the continued presence of US bases could entangle the UAE in regional conflicts in which it is not a direct party. He said that focusing on strengthening national capabilities and advanced armament would be more beneficial than maintaining a foreign military presence.
