Nigel Farage calls out Hannah Spencer after she claims MPs are boozing on job

Nigel Farage has called out Hannah Spencer after the Green Party MP accused politicians of boozing on the job. The Reform UK leader slammed the Greens for wanting to "legalise heroin and crack" while condemning having an "afternoon pint".

Speaking on PoliticsJoe, Ms Spencer, MP for Gorton and Denton, said she could smell alcohol in parliament. She claimed there is a culture in politics where "people can just drink alcohol while they're in work". The Green MP said: "I noticed this the other day, when you get smell the alcohol when people are in between votes. There's a room I walked past and looked in and people were sat and having a drink.

"I can't imagine if a cleaner did that or someone working in a bank had a few drinks and then went back to work smelling of alcohol. That wouldn't happen."

She continued: "There's been so many cases recently of questionable and dangerous behaviour allegedly from MPs and staff because of this culture where people can just drink alcohol while they're in work. Life doesn't work like that."

However, Mr Farage has since taken to X to respond to the claims. He wrote: "The Greens are happy to legalise heroin and crack, but now we learn they think an afternoon pint is a step too far. Make it make sense."

According to the Green Party manifesto, the party "is in favour of legalising a number of substances which are currently widely used but only available via illegal methods". The party added: "However, this does not mean we would make dangerous substances easily available to buy over the counter. Our policy is based on combining legalisation with education and regulation."

Meanwhile, columnist Andrew Neil also called out Ms Spencer on X. He accused the Green Party of wanting to legalise heroin, asking "what planet is she on?"

He posted: "'Smell the alcohol'?! Wow. I wonder what she thinks it will be like when she and the Greens get their way and legalise heroin? Also, she says that, unlike MPs, she doesn’t think bankers would have a drink then go back to work. What planet is she on?"

The Greens' say substances such as cocaine and heroin "would only be made available to people in strictly controlled circumstances, under medical supervision."

They continued: "There is evidence that legalisation can help people to more easily access treatment plans for their addiction, and to engage with services that can help them with detox and rehabilitation. These interventions all help with harm reduction and long term relapse prevention."
