Built on leftover land beside Tokyo’s train tracks, architect Takehiko Suzuki designed this 33sqm/355sqft home for a longtime local resident. Rebuilt on just one-third of the site where the owner’s family home once stood, the house rises vertically around a thick, tree-like pillar. A sculptural staircase becomes more than circulation, shaping a split-level home where each step reveals a new way to live within the narrow, irregular footprint. The lower levels contain the entrance, laundry, bathroom, and bedroom, while the upper floors unfold into a dining-kitchen, a small study set into a bay window, a living room with a built-in sofa, and a loft that has unexpectedly become the owner’s favourite sleeping spot. Birch plywood furniture runs throughout the house, chosen for its strength, brightness, and water resistance, while storage is integrated everywhere — beneath stairs, under floors, behind curtains, and above doorways. Windows of varying sizes are scattered across the façade, carefully positioned to bring in sunlight while maintaining privacy from the surrounding railway lines.
