'The old world is gone' Marco Rubio leads US delegation at Munich Security Conference | DW News
The 2026 Munich Security Conference kicks off today in the capital of Germany's southern state of Bavaria and runs through to Sunday. This year's edition sees a wide representation of European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It comes as Europe has been exploring self-reliance in the field of security as its relationship with the US under President Donald Trump faces unprecedented challenges. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is due to address the MSC on Saturday, is the top-ranking US official at the conference.
Apart from the transatlantic relationship, the MSC will also host discussions on Russia's war in Ukraine, which marks its fourth anniversary on February 24. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among those attending. The conference will also discuss the situation in the Middle East, including in the devastated Gaza Strip and relations with Iran.
The MSC brings together security experts, politicians and military leaders from around the world. This year's edition comes amid growing fears for transatlantic security under US President Trump.
