With race one of the season out of the way we have the first rough idea of what the competitive order might look like this year. Or at least for the first few races of the year. It was no surprise to anyone to see the Mercedes’ cars finish first and second in Melbourne. Even before they dominated the rest of the grid in qualifying they were the strong favourites for both the race win and both titles this year. However what wasn’t expected is how hard Ferrari pushed Mercedes during Sunday’s Grand Prix. The Scudderia appears to be within touching distance and are pushing hard to contend with Mercedes for race wins. But after their race strategy choices in Australia, will it be their achilles heel again? And are Mercedes hiding any extra performance in their engine? Before I answer those questions, let’s talk about the challenge facing the teams this weekend.
