Defence Secretary John Healey has urged people to "focus on our actions, rather than just simply the exchange of words and social media posts".
It follows repeated criticism by Donald Trump of the UK's position on the Iran war, as well as the British military itself.
Healey also said the government has "got a job to be able to gain the acceptance" of the public that increasing defence spending will lead to cuts elsewhere.
Defence Secretary has defended a lengthy delay to the publication of a key defence plan, saying it is "not stopping us getting on with the job."
