Swing Check Valve versus Lift Check Valve: Significant Differences
Both swing check valves and lift check valves monitor for backflow, but they operate in a different way:
A swing check valve has a hinged disc which, when there is forward flow of fluid, opens up, and when the fluid flow is shut off, it closes up, which suits low-pressure usage.
An otherwise lift check valve uses a lift piston or a ball which is lifted upon occurrence of flow in a direction forward and descends, sealing the path of flow when fluid ceases. This type of design best suits in the application of high pressure and provides a better seal.
While swing check valves are best used for free flow and low-resistance applications, lift check valves are better utilized for high-pressure and high-velocity situations.
What is a wafer-type swing check valve?
A lightweight, space-saving version of a conventional swing check valve is referred to as a wafer-type swing check valve. It has a slim profile that is installed between two pipeline flanges in place of large flanges. It is an ideal option for water treatment plants and HVAC applications where space and weight are important considerations.

Working Principle:
A swing check valve works in a straightforward but effective way. Pressure of the fluid lifts the disc when it flows forward, allowing free flow through the valve. Gravity and weight of the disc, however, make it swing back to the closed position, blocking backflow, when the direction of flow reverses or stops. The system ensures proper flow control and protects against reverse flow pipe and equipment damage.
