Younger travellers shinning Spain for new holiday hotspots
Young travellers are turning their back on destinations such as Ibiza in favour of places like Paris and Rome, according to new research by Generator. The research found that nearly two-thirds of younger travellers are actively avoiding mainstream hotspots and are opting for destinations that offer 'more cultural depth, unique experiences, and a sense of discovery'. Rome takes top spot with more than a quarter of Millennials and Gen Zs seeing it as the go-to destination this summer. Paris came in second with Amsterdam rounding-up the top three. Other European capitals to make the list included Venice, Copenhagen and Dublin. With cultural breaks on the rise, traditional destinations are beginning to fall out of favour, with a quarter of Gen Z and Millennials identifying Ibiza as the most overhyped holiday spot for young travellers. Thailand came second on the list with one in seven saying that the Southeast Asian Kingdom is overhyped. Other locations that have fallen out of favour include Bali, Australia and Japan. The data also revealed that an increasing number of travellers are embracing non-traditional holiday spots, with one in 10 considering Mongolia as a destination and one in 20 eyeing a trip to Uzbekistan. Annajane Guzel, Global Director of Brand Marketing at Generator, said: “Whether it’s the historic streets of Rome or the romantic je ne sais quoi of Paris, young travellers are seeking destinations that offer something truly unique - prioritising culture, authenticity, and meaningful experiences over the traditional party circuit. “At Generator, we’ve seen first-hand how this generation is redefining what it means to travel, moving beyond the mainstream in search of adventure, history and personal growth."
