Five things we learned from Micheál Martin's Oval Office meeting with Donald Trump

When I asked DonaldTrump what advice as a businessman he would give the Taoiseach on our housing crisis, he said: “Why do they have a housing crisis? Because they are doing so well.” Pointing to the Taoiseach, he added: “I know this gentleman, he’ll get it sorted.” Mr Martin thanked him for his answer and later said: “The number one issue in Ireland is housing, to be honest, and I think as was correctly pointed out, we've got to build more houses.”  Ireland has taken advantage of the US  The president referenced the many US companies that have come to Ireland but said it would never have happened on his watch.“I'm not upset with you. I think I respect what you've done. You've done a great job, but our people, our people, our people, did a very bad job recently." Trump loves Conor McGregor and Rory McIlroy  Asked who his favorite Irish person was, Mr Trump referred to the Irish mixed-martial arts fighter without initially naming the Notorious, stating: “He’s got the best tattoos, I’ve ever seen,” adding “Conor’s great, right?” Then turning to the Taoiseach, he referenced Mr Martin’s own father, who was a boxer.Later in the press conference, he said he had been golfing with Rory McIlroy in recent weeks who, he said, was in great form.Trump knows about Ireland’s pharma sector and is going to impose tariffs “The United States of America is going to take back a lot of what was stolen from it by other countries and by, frankly, incompetent US leadership, grossly incompetent. "I gave you an example of Ireland. I would have never let that happen. Impossible for that to have happened. "But we're going to take back our wealth, and we're going to take back a lot of the companies that left are coming back. If you haven't read, we have the biggest computer chip company ever.”  My personal chat with a charming Trump  At the end of the 50-minute press conference, I loitered behind in the Oval Office to ask the president if he would be coming to Ireland for the Ryder Cup.“I would love to,” he told me before turning to Mr Martin and pointing at me:“Make sure she’s here, she’s very nice,” Mr Trump said, looking back at me with a smile. He certainly knows how to charm.
