Tesla China sells 78,828 cars in Mar, up 156.87% from Feb

China's March sales were down 11.49 percent from 89,064 in the same month last year. In the first quarter, Tesla China sold 172,754 vehicles, a 21.79 percent decrease year-on-year and a 28.29 percent decrease from the fourth quarter. Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw a significant rebound in China-made vehicles sold last month, as the effects of the Chinese New Year holiday subsided. Tesla China sold 78,828 vehicles in March, including those sold in China and those exported to overseas markets, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). That's a 156.87 percent increase from February's 30,688, although it's down 11.49 percent from 89,064 in the same period last year. In the first quarter, Tesla China sold 172,754 vehicles, including exports. That's a 21.79 percent decrease from 220,876 in the same period last year and a 28.29 percent decrease from 240,902 in the fourth quarter. This year's Chinese New Year holiday from January 28 to February 4. Last year the holiday was February 10-17, 2024. The week-long break usually has a significant impact on production and deliveries. Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it. Figures for Tesla's deliveries in China in March and exports from the Shanghai plant are not yet available. Tesla launched the facelifted five-seat Model Y in China on January 10, with deliveries beginning on February 26. The company initially offered two variants it dubbed the "Launch Series" and gave buyers extra benefits, and their sales ended on February 28. Tesla began selling the regular version of the facelifted Model Y in China on March 1 at the same price as the Launch Series. On March 18, the Model Y Long Range version's price in China was raised by RMB 10,000 yuan ($1,380), or 3.29 percent, from the previous price of RMB 303,500 yuan to the latest price of RMB 313,500 yuan. The price of the Model Y's other on-sale variant, the entry-level rear-wheel-drive version, is unchanged, with the starting price remaining at RMB 263,500. Tesla began offering three-years zero-interest financing on the Model Y rear-wheel-drive version on March 18, and expanded that incentive on March 31 to also include the Model Y Long Range version.
