This Reddit Theory About an Unseen Poker Face Season 2 Character Could Change the Entire Story (& It Makes Perfect Sense)

Poker Face has an even more jam-packed guest star list in season two than it did in season one. But one of those stars is a mysterious character who has appeared in several episodes. He hasn't technically appeared since he is never actually seen. But he's heard as Charlie regales her crazy tales to him over CB Radio while she’s in the car. The man known only as Good Buddy, voiced by Steve Buscemi, is seemingly just a supportive voice, someone to listen as Charlie talks about her encounters and who remains a constant in Charlie’s life. But some fans are theorizing that there could be more to the character than meets the eye, or rather, the ear. What We Know So Far About Good Buddy Good Buddy is introduced in “The Taste of Human Blood,” episode four of season two of Poker Face, which has earned a fantastic Rotten Tomatoes score. Now that Charlie is no longer on the run from danger since Beatrix Hasp agreed to call off the hit on her in the previous episode "Whack-A-Mole," she is a bit more relaxed. This means she’s also open to connecting with people outside of the inner circle of those within whatever odd job she has taken next. Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score IMDb Score 97% 71% 7.8/10 While chilling in the car with her feet up, she starts playing around with the CB Radio to pass the time. She’s looking for anyone who might be out there, someone to talk to and share stories with about what she's doing and the things that are happening around her. She finally gets a response, and it’s a truck driver who is on the road all the time, just like her. They connect about movie quotes, ironically one from the 1980 movie Out of the Blue about a woman who goes on the run to escape her home life. Charlie doesn’t ask his name but affectionately refers to him as “Good Buddy” as she asks for his story. He doesn’t reveal much beyond the fact that he drives a rig and racks up miles, but he asks her about where she is. She gives a vague response, and they continue on with more philosophical discussions. After each episode, Charlie picks up the CB Radio looking for Good Buddy with another “you won’t believe what happened to me” story as the body count racks up around her, with more deaths like in season one of the show. While it appears that she doesn’t go into details about what happens each time, she does say some things that may reveal where she is and what type of job she has. It's possible she reveals more in parts of the conversation viewers don't hear. She also talks about lessons she learned and the strange encounters she had. In episode six, “Sloppy Joseph,” for example, she jokes with him that it turns out eight-year-olds don’t have all the answers after all. Without revealing much, she's hinting that she's working somewhere with kids, possibly at a school. The conversations are usually surface-level, but they also delve deep into the meaning of life and the importance of the journey over the destination. In a way, Good Buddy is helping Charlie justify her decision to remain a nomad, traveling from one place to the next without putting down roots anywhere. Her journey yields stories, which build character, and solving crimes gives her purpose. Oddly, Good Buddy is the only constant in Charlie’s life right now. But some fans think he could play a bigger role by the end of the season. Theories About Good Buddy’s Real Identity Fans know, of course, that the distinctive voice of Good Buddy is that of actor Steve Buscemi, one of many guest stars in Season 2. His role so far is to help tie up each episode, giving it a fitting end as Charlie explores her feelings about what happened. But some fans believe that Good Buddy will eventually show up in her life, and it might not be in a good way. Actor Name Other Notable Projects Most Recent Appearances Upcoming Appearances Steve Buscemi Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, Boardwalk Empire The Studio, Big Mouth Wednesday Some point out, for example, that CB Radios have a limited range, usually tapping out at about 50 miles under good conditions. Yet Good Buddy always seems to be there when Charlie picks up to find him. This would suggest that, despite driving a rig, he’s somehow always close by. Could this suggest that he’s following her? Redditor NashMott04 thinks that he is. "If he's a trucker," they note, "he could legitimately be entering and exiting her range. However...I think he's following/stalking her and she doesn't realize it yet." He always says a lot without saying much, often presenting answers as questions or simple statements that can’t really be construed as truths or lies. He doesn’t present anything that could trigger Charlie’s bulls**t meter, and this could be by design. Is he careful with his words so she doesn’t detect when he’s lying? He first told her he travels from one mile marker to another, but never specified where. "There's for sure going to be a point where he says something and it does/doesn't trigger Charlie's bulls**t meter," adds bookthief8. "And it's gonna be a big reveal. So I am also leaning towards him being an antagonist." PM5K23 adds that it's possible Good Buddy is actually working with Hasp or one of the other rival families, and he's slowly getting information to locate her. "If anything," they add, "I appreciate if he's being methodical." His Presence Could Be More Innocent Than That Of course, this could all be fans reading far too much into the situation than is there. Redditor Infinite_Struggle_10, for example, thinks that the existence of Good Buddy is merely paying homage to Columbo, the howcatchem procedural that provides clear inspiration for Poker Face. Some think he could be imaginary, just Charlie talking to herself in the car after never having received a response on the radio. Redditor MrKingKhufu even goes so far as to predict a “she’s always been dead” theory whereby Charlie was shot by Hasp, she’s in the hospital in a coma, and Good Buddy is a patient talking next to her. Others view him as a guardian angel-like character, similar to Mr. Bean’s store clerk in Love, Actually. Maybe viewers only see the times Charlie does get him on the line and not the many times through her journey that she might try, and he’s not there. However, it does seem odd that each time she’s in a different place, from Florida to Alabama to Washington, she manages to connect with him at least once. Some think that while they might eventually cross paths, Good Buddy could be the one to save Charlie, not someone trying to harm her. Conversely, she might even be investigating his murder by the end. It’s possible she comes across his dead body, realizes who he is, and this sets things up for the core mystery of season three. (Note: Poker Face has not yet been officially renewed for a third season.) Whatever the case, it would make sense for Good Buddy to show his face at some point and play a bigger role in another overarching story. With the story that connected the series together from the beginning and explained why Charlie left home in the first place, having wrapped up, Poker Face is missing a link to tie the plot together. Good Buddy could very well be that missing piece of the puzzle.
