Discontinued welfare grant replaced by two critical payments
A discontinued social welfare grant has been replaced by two critical payments. It was confirmed last year by then-Minister of Social Protection, Heather Humphreys, that the gap left by the Bereavement Grant is covered by two popular schemes. The Bereavement Grant was previously worth €850, but it hasn’t accepted new applicants in several years. It offered financial support to applicants to help pay for their loved one’s funerals. It was explained that the grant will not be coming back, but there are other options available, such as the Supplementary Welfare Allowance and the Additional Needs Payment. Last year, she said: “The Bereavement Grant has been discontinued for some time but under the Supplementary Welfare Allowance (SWA) scheme, my Department may make an Additional Needs Payment (ANP) to help meet essential expenditure which an eligible person could not reasonably be expected to meet from their weekly income.” People may also be able to qualify for the Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant. It’s a once-off payment to widows, widowers or surviving civil partners with dependent children. The grant is worth €8,000. Payment of the Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant is made by cheque, payable to the widow, widower or surviving civil partner. This is issued immediately following the decision of the Deciding Officer on one of the above payments. This grant is available to widows, widowers or surviving civil partners who have one or more dependent children living with them at the date of death, or a widow or surviving civil partner whose child is born within 10 months of the date of death of her spouse or civil partner. For the purpose of the Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant, a qualified child is a child up to age 18, who is normally resident in the State and who is living with you. A child aged between 18 and 22 who is normally resident in the State continues to be a qualified child if they are in full-time education at a recognised school or college. You must also qualify for one of the following payments: Widow's, Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner’s Contributory Pension One-Parent Family Payment Death Benefit under the Occupational Injuries Scheme A Widow's, Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner’s (Contributory) Pension under EU regulations or under a bilateral social security agreement between Ireland and another country State Pension (Non-Contributory) Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
