Titan builds graphite processing facility in New York
Titan Mining, which produces zinc concentrate at its Empire State Mine located in New York state, has started construction of its fully permitted commercial demonstration facility to produce natural flake graphite at the site.
The fully permitted facility leverages the site’s zinc mill and infrastructure. Engineering work is complete, and procurement is underway. The facility is due to be commissioned in the second half of this year.
The plant will have initial capacity to process 60,000 tons of feed annually from the Kilbourne Project, producing 1,000-1,200 tons per year of graphite concentrate. The company is ultimately targeting production capability of 40,000 tons, which would satisfy a large amount of US natural flake graphite demand.
The preliminary economic assessment for Kilbourne is also expected in the second half.
Titan said it will continue to operate the demonstration facility to progress product qualifications alongside technical and economic studies, so that the company scales production appropriately and has secured offtake agreements in place before making major capital commitments.
Construction of the facility is supported through equipment financing from the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency (SLCIDA) and the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC).
“This launch underscores the scalability and optionality of our district. Plans to produce both zinc and graphite on one site uniquely positions us to deliver critical materials from a single, fully permitted platform with established infrastructure,” said Titan CEO Don Taylor.
