June the fourth warmest on record in Ireland, but wetter than average, new data shows

Despite a cool start, June has become the fourth warmest on record for Ireland, with Roscommon recording the highest temperature here so far this year.The mercury at Mount Dillon hit a high of 29.6C on Friday, June 20, but overall, the month was wetter and duller than average.The month continued the recent warmer-than-normal monthly trend, with the hottest, driest, and sunniest spell between Monday, June 16, and Saturday, June 21, with the east of the country experiencing the best of the heat.The average temperature for the month was 15.1C — the fourth warmest June on record since 1900 — and the fourth consecutive month with temperatures in the respective top eight averages on record in 126 years.Of the top 10 warmest Junes, five have occurred recently — in 2025, 2023, 2018, 2010, and 2006 — with June 2023 the warmest, with an average temperature of 16.22C, and the coldest June was in 1972, with an average temperature of 12.68C.The average temperature for June 2025 was 1.88C above the 1961-1991 long-term average for the month, and 1.42C above the long-term average for the most recent climatological reference period of 1991-2020.The data is contained in the Met Éireann climate statement for June 2025, which was published based on available preliminary data from its 25 principal weather stations around the country.As temperatures soared across Europe in the final third of June, Ireland stayed on the cloudier northern edge of the heat dome, which brought some uncomfortably high nighttime temperatures, contributing to the high June temperatures overall.Rainfall was above average in most places, with an average rainfall of about 100mm, making the month the 24th wettest June on record since 1941, and the wettest June since 2022.It was driest in the south, where the lowest monthly rainfall total of 47mm was recorded at Cork Airport, with the month’s highest monthly rainfall total of 165mm recorded at Athenry in Co Galway, its wettest June since 2012.The highest daily rainfall total was recorded at Casement Aerodrome in Dublin on Saturday, June 14, when 42.6mm of rain fell — its highest daily fall for June since 2009.It was a dull month, and dullest in the west, with the highest monthly sunshine total of 178.6 hours recorded at Casement Aerodrome and the lowest sunshine totals at Knock Airport in Co Mayo.Johnstown Castle in Co Wexford was the sunniest spot, with 15 hours on Wednesday, June 18.
