Plans for major tourist park in West Kerry refused by local council

Planning for a new tourist accommodation in West Kerry has been refused by the county council.Rínn Rua Holiday Park Ltd sought planning permission to construct an integrated tourism and leisure park, as well as for the redevelopment of a derelict hotel at Emlaghmore West in Ballinskelligs. As part of the development, the former hotel was to be replaced with four new self-catering studio apartments, three one-bedroom self-catering apartments, and 15 two-bedroom self-catering apartments. The proposed development also included a new bar, dining room, rooftop restaurant and shop. The remainder of the works included six Hobbit Huts, 21 glamping pods, 25 holiday homes, 144 mobile homes, 20 campervan stands, a camping area, a washroom, and toilet facilities. However, the council received some 60 objections from local residents, with concerns that the size of the development would result in a new "small town," along with fears it would harm the area's tranquillity and biodiversity. Kerry County Council refused the plans, noting that the area was “visually sensitive,” with the development being unsuitable due to potential water pollution arising from the site. The council also raised concerns about the impact on the area’s biodiversity and light pollution.Meanwhile, planning for a new residential development in Cork has been submitted to the County Council.Developers O'Brien & O'Flynn have sought planning permission to construct 16 new homes at Harbour Heights in Passage West. The proposed homes will all be two-storey and comprise two three-bedroom semi-detached units, three three-bedroom terraced houses, nine two-bedroom terraced houses and two two-bedroom units. The development will also include all associated site development works, with Cork County Council due to decide on the case by August 28, 2025.
