Sinn Féin expels member after partner's arrest over alleged mosque attack plot
Sinn Fein Party Logo Sinn Féin has expelled a party member after her partner was arrested as part of a massive cross border investigation into an alleged far right plot to attack a mosque. Two men have already been charged over the alleged plot and officers from the anti-terror Special Detective Unit made their move on a third suspect in an operation on Wednesday morning. We have learned that the suspect's partner was a member of Sinn Fein in the Leinster area - but has now been expelled. Sources insisted the man himself was never a member of Sinn Féin.The party told The Irish Mirror the female member was expelled on Saturday for failing to tell the party her home had been raided by Garda anti terror officers as part of the probe - over which two men have already been charged.Sources tell us the partner of the ex Sinn Fein member is suspected of taking part in an an alleged propaganda video that was seized as part of a Garda operation last week. And we have also learned that Garda detectives suspect the video - which featured four men - was filmed in the house of the man who was arrested on Wednesday. That is also the home of the former Sinn Fein member. She is not herself suspected of involvement in far right activity.Sinn Fein confirmed the expulsion in a statement to us on Thursday morning. It said: "Sinn Féin's National Chairperson Declan Kearney today [Thursday] confirmed that the partner of a female member of the party had been arrested as part of the investigation into last week's arrest of two alleged far right extremists."Mr. Kearney said: "We will not allow our party to be exposed to any far right elements. The far right have targeted our party for several years now with death threats, pickets on members' homes and offices and more recently violent actions. We have worked carefully with the Gardaí, who have been active and vigilant in the face of these threats."The man was arrested at the home in Laois as part of an ongoing cross border investigation between the Garda and PSNI. He can be held for up to three days. Gardai confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday. It said: "This afternoon, Wednesday 12th November 2025, Gardaí arrested a third male in Co. Laois as part of this cross border terrorism related investigation."The male, aged in his 30s, is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in the midlands."The investigation continues to be led by An Garda Síochána Special Detective Unit.No further information is available at this time."Mr Kearney said in his statement: "Last week's arrest of two individuals alleged to be far right extremists has caused huge concern across the country. It was the speedy action of Gardaí which prevented potentially devastating events occurring. The party was informed on Friday night that the home of a female party member and her partner had been raided and he has since been arrested."The female party member was expelled from the party on Saturday evening as she failed to notify the party that her home was raided or inform the party about the associated seriousness of this situation."As this is a live and serious Garda investigation we cannot say anymore at this time."Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content. We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
