An investigation is underway after the body of a baby was found in a rubbish bin. The discovery was made in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand on December 7 in Nong Bua Village, Moo 10, Nong Yat subdistrict.
Police arrived on scene to find a black rubbish bin at the side of a concrete road close to a local rubber plantation. Inside, the remains of a baby wrapped in a black t-shirt inside a white plastic bag were discovered. So significantly decomposed was the body that officials were unable to determine the baby’s sex.
Although the body retained ten fingers and toes, large parts of the body had been consumed by large maggots.
A local woman told how she heard noises in the middle of the night on December 5 that sounded like a crying cat.
Three days later, after noticing a strong stench from a nearby bin, the lady asked her daughter to check inside, leading to the discovery of the baby’s corpse.
Initial examinations on the body show that the baby had died two to three days prior to its discovery, with authorities awaiting the results of DNA testing to aid their investigation into the baby’s identity.
Police Captain Sitthiphon Wongnilobon, deputy investigator at Mueang Nakhon Phanom Police Station told local reporters that he suspects the mother to be young, possibly a teenager, according to local media.
Officers are in the process of checking hospital records within a five kilometre radius to try identify recently born babies.
The chilling discovery is the latest in a series of abandoned babies to be discovered in Thailand in recent weeks.
In November, Thai authorities confirmed the discovery of two abandoned newborn babies in Bangkok in different districts of the Thai capital.
According to the Bangkok Post, Thung Song Hong police discovered a newborn in a bin bag on November 15.
Officers examining the bag, found the body of a male baby with an umbilical cord still attached, as well as a medicine bag and sanitary pad.
In a separate case on the same day, officers also discovered a female baby in a public toilet tank. The baby was understood to be in a critical condition in hospital as investigations into her identity underway.
