Move over smash burgers, there’s a new foodie craze hitting London, and potatoes are the star of the show.

Frites Atelier, a Dutch brand that specialises in fries topped with sauces and more, has finally made its way over to the UK and has opened its first restaurant in Soho.

Located at 34 Old Compton Street, the new site is serving up four signature dishes known as ‘Frites Specials’.

These include fries topped with Parmesan and basil, fries with a Flemish beef stew, Sea Nori fries (said to be spicy and crispy) and a seasonal Cheddar Supreme option.

There are also several sauces you can choose from, such as truffle, basil mayo, bernaise, and andalouse.

With three-time Michelin-star chef Sergio Herman at the helm of the business, prices for the food don’t exactly come cheap, though.

The loaded fries start from £8.95 per portion, and this rises to £14.50 for the most expensive item on the menu (the beef stew frites).

And while this number will likely put some people off, others will be desperate to try what have been dubbed the ‘world’s best fries’.

In one Tripadvisor review, for the restaurant in Ghent, Belgium, Marti C gave five stars and said: ‘Very good, the best frites in the world!’

Similarly, Arturo N wrote: ‘The best frites with beef stew ever. It really is worth [it] to go there. Would go again and try other variations.’

Already there are equally impressive reviews flocking in for the new London location, with Narendra Lodhia saying: ‘Fries Atelier has proven that street food can be haute cuisine. The dedication to sourcing the best potatoes and crafting incredible sauces results in a dish that is deceptively simple and flawlessly executed. It is a true five-star vegetarian indulgence that I recommend highly. The frites here are gold-standard.’

Jessy C added that it is an ‘outstanding restaurant’ and ‘worth the wait’.

Frites Atelier was founded in 2016 and now has locations in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, and Roosendaal.

Speaking about the new London launch, founder Sergio Herman, said: ‘The Dutch have been obsessed with Frites for generations, we turned them into a craft long before loaded fries became a trend.

‘Brits think they know chips, but usually only when they’re next to fish. In the Netherlands, fries stand on their own, and at Frites Atelier, we show exactly what that means: quality, creativity, and care.

‘London is ready for Frites done the right way.’

This comes after another food chain from the Netherlands confirmed it would be expanding across the UK.

Fat Phill’s, which is said to be home to Amsterdam’s ‘best burger’, quietly launched in Clapham Junction in London at the end of 2024, serving up smash burgers, American-style sandwiches, loaded fries, and mac and cheese.

The Dutch chain, also known as Fat Phill’s Diner, has gone on to open a second London site in Wood Green and has confirmed more are coming in London and beyond in 2026.

Chief operating officer, Natalie Van Der Laan, revealed at the recent Propel Franchisor Showcase that the plan is to open up to five new sites in the UK next year.

She claimed ‘several locations’ were already in the pipeline, with some in the regions.

The brand has also confirmed it’s also ‘set to rock Europe’, and as well as a UK and Ireland expansion, the team is in talks in Germany and Belgium.
