Founded by Joshua and Juliet, who met during their studies at the Royal College of Art, Earthworks Ceramics Studios in Brixton is an artist-led space with a focus on collaboration and creativity. Whether you’re a total pottery novice or you’re confident with clay, there’s a class, course or space that’s suitable here.
Open to all levels, Earthworks runs a range of ceramics classes, including taster sessions where complete beginners can practice the basics of wheel throwing to six-week courses for people to build up their practice. The classes are all kept small, ensuring you get plenty of one-on-one guidance from the teachers, and the curriculum is designed to help you explore your interests and develop at your own pace.
More experienced potters, recent graduates and local artists can also use the studios on a membership basis. The space is well-equipped – it’s just expanded so there’s room for more makers – and the community is always keen to share tools and technical knowledge.

We recently did a taster session, and thanks to our friendly and patient teacher who gave us plenty of hands-on help (and rescued a few pots along the way), we made some pieces that we’re actually pretty impressed with. If you’re looking for more screen-free activities to try in the new year, Earthworks is well worth checking out.
