This is one secret that won’t stay buried.
Oxygen announced Jan. 8 that its chilling series Buried in the Backyard is returning Feb. 7 with a new set of mysteries, pulling fans into the dark depths of human nature.
“Buried in the Backyard unearths haunting stories of ordinary people who fall victim to unimaginable crimes that have been deliberately concealed by perpetrators, sometimes for years, in hopes that their actions remain forever undiscovered,” explains an announcement for part two of the series’ sixth season. “Season six continues with complex investigations into unsuspecting victims who’ve found themselves on the wrong side of a killer, delving into the disturbed minds of those willing to go to extremes to bury the truth.”
The second half of season six—which will debut Saturday Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT—will bring viewers into the world of a deadly cult, dig up the truth behind the Santa Claus bandit and reveal dark family secrets as it delves into eight new mysteries.
Whether its isolated fields or murky swamps, the series promises to explore “the overlooked places where the most twisted crimes unfold—often just out of sight and far too close to home.”
Buried in the Backyard is produced by Lionsgate Alternative Television. David Garfinkle, Jay Renfroe, Bob Kusbit and Billie Speer serve as executive producers while Bobby Munster is a co-executive producer.
The new episodes will kick off with a look into an armored car robbery and Santa Claus bandit. Though the case was once splashed across the headlines, it soon grew cold—until local man Robert Schmidt was found buried in the snow, according to an episode description.
Schmidt’s brothers told investigators that he had been working with an armored car company when he was the victim of an armed robbery on March 4, 1987. Two years later, he was found dead in a snowbank.
As one person close to the case theorized in a sneak preview, “Anyone that was involved in that robbery, if they felt that Robbie was ratting them out, that would have been motive enough for them to kill him.”
Detectives set out to determine whether the two incidents were connected, while also uncovering Schmidt’s penchant for gambling.
