MPU to launch classes in Hengqin University Town by September

As part of Macau’s push to expand higher education into mainland China, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) confirmed it will launch postgraduate classes this September in the Macao-Hengqin International Education (University) Town. Vivian Lei, acting rector of MPU, announced the plans Saturday during the university’s 45th anniversary and 2026 Open Day at its auditorium. The Hengqin campus will complement MPU’s main site and “embrace new regional and international opportunities.” Lei told attendees the first phase targets a transitional campus in the Guangdong-Macao Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. “Classes will start between August and September,” she said. Enrollment is currently underway for about 200 initial students, a figure expected to grow yearly, she added. According to MPU’s statement, the programs to be offered at the transitional campus for postgraduates include health sciences, technological innovation, and Chinese-Portuguese languages. The statement details, “The subsequent phase involves the construction of the MPU campus in Hengqin, which is planned to commence in 2027 and is expected to be completed by 2030.” This initiative, under SAR government coordination, involves the University of Macau, MPU, and the Macao University of Tourism. Kong Chi Meng, director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), similarly affirmed the Macao-Hengqin International Education (University) Town’s September teaching start during UM’s anniversary celebrations yesterday.
