Sean Everitt ends Edinburgh uncertainty with contract extension as David Nucifora explains decision

South African to remain in charge at Hive Stadium

Sean Everitt has ended uncertainty over his Edinburgh Rugby future by signing a new contract to remain head coach of the capital club for a further two years.

The South African's deal had been due to expire at the end of the current season but has now been extended until the end of the 2027-28 campaign, which will take his tenure to five years.

Everitt has faced periods of scrutiny having overseen mixed results since arriving from the Bulls, where he held a consultancy position, in 2023 after previously spending 15 years with the Sharks.

Edinburgh finished 10th in the United Rugby Championship in his first campaign in charge but secured a seventh place finish last season to claim a place in the play-offs for the first time since 2021-22.

A first European semi-final in 10 years was also achieved last term in the EPCR Challenge Cup where Edinburgh were beaten narrowly by eventual winners Bath.

Edinburgh are 10th in the URC table at the halfway point of the current season and could reach the knock-out stages of the Champions Cup this weekend if they overcome Bath at the Rec on Friday - or results elsewhere go in their favour.

“I am incredibly proud to extend terms with Edinburgh Rugby," Everitt explained. “I have loved the challenge of bringing through the next crop of young Scottish talent and seeing them grow in this environment.

"I firmly believe that with patience and work, this team can truly inspire the city. Our motto of ‘local players becoming legends’ is something we live by, and I am excited to see what we can achieve with this next generation of Edinburgh players."

Everitt has also been on the wrong end of three consecutive defeats to Glasgow Warriors in the 1872 Cup across his Edinburgh reign.

He has, however, handed senior debuts to 27 Scottish players - 13 of whom developed through the club’s academy system - and his commitment to working with young players was a key factor in his contract renewal.

Scottish Rugby Performance Director David Nucifora said: “We are delighted to confirm Sean Everitt’s extension as Head Coach of Edinburgh Rugby.

"In our recent discussions, it was clear that we share a vision for building on the strong foundations Sean has laid to date. Scottish Rugby will continue to build strong alignment with Sean and Edinburgh Rugby so that the team can reach its full potential.

"We are particularly focused on accelerating the development of Edinburgh’s exciting crop of young Scottish players who in recent times have shown their ability to compete at this level of the game.”

Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director Douglas Struth added: “Continuity is a hallmark of the most successful clubs in rugby; they have benefitted from having coaches at the helm for extended periods. That continuity will be crucial moving forward.

“Sean has committed to bringing through a generation of young players who will pull on the Edinburgh jersey with pride for years to come, and this is vital.

“We have a clear blueprint and plan for the future on the field, and this new deal allows Sean to continue building on our vision of local players becoming legends."
