A bomb discovery has forced 800 residents to evacuate their homes overnight - with the local council acknowledging the circumstances are 'far from ideal'.

Locals have been moved out to allow safe removal of a WWII explosive found at a construction site in Plymouth, The Mirror reports.

The wartime ordnance was uncovered in Plymouth on Wednesday, January 14, with assessments conducted since to determine the "safest and least disruptive method of disposal". Throughout this period, numerous residents have been ordered to vacate their properties before being permitted to return as operations were temporarily suspended.

Plymouth City Council declared at 11pm on Thursday, January 15, that anyone living within a 150-metre radius of the convoy route for the bomb's removal must vacate their properties immediately. Residents will be required to stay away from their homes overnight whilst the operation is completed.

It is expected that proceedings will not conclude until 3am at the earliest. The Millbay explosive has wreaked havoc since its discovery, resulting in road closures and people left stranded, unable to remain in their dwellings.

The device was discovered during building works on derelict land situated between Bath Street and Martin Street. It was identified after additional testing was undertaken at the location following an irregularity detected in 2024.

Due to the security cordon, neighbouring premises have been compelled to shut. Millbay Academy remains shut after closing following the initial detection of the bomb.

The school has switched to remote learning throughout this period. The Moxy Hotel has likewise been closed, with guests required to vacate their rooms.

The hotel was evacuated promptly and ensured all guests received alternative lodging, though many departed hastily without their possessions. The council building Ballard House has also been shut and will remain closed on Friday (January 16) for any scheduled meetings or appointments.

As residents must leave their properties, an evacuation assembly point has been established at Christ the King Church Hall on Armada Way for those with nowhere else to shelter. Once police remove the cordon and operations conclude, residents will be permitted to return home.

A spokesperson for Plymouth City Council stated: "Once everyone has evacuated, the removal process can begin. While we cannot yet confirm the exact duration of the evacuation, we expect it to be complete by 3am.

"People are encouraged to watch the Council's social media feeds on Facebook and X for updates."

Residents had previously been evacuated from their properties following the discovery of the device but were subsequently allowed to return.

"We recognise that leaving at short notice, particularly at night, is far from ideal. However, now that the device has been uncovered, the priority is to complete the operation swiftly and safely," the spokesperson continued.
