One year, it is written that the the cruel Sultan of Timur resolved to torture a number of his harem girls to death to satiate his depraved desires and so that they might express their love for him in plangent songs of agony. Princess Wendy, his favourite wife of many years intervened to save the young women; proposing herself as the victim in their place, knowing that despite their mutual devotion, he would not be able to resist such a 'gift'. Even the melancholic poetry of losing his love in the very act that allows her to offer herself to him most fully was irresistible to this twisted and decadent sovereign.

Thus he accept her offer, checkmated both by her goodness and ineffable desire, for while her sacrifice arose out of a genuine altruism and a highly developed sense of responsibility for the young women in her charge, it was born also of a dark passion of her perfumed and opulently jewelled flesh.
