Anyone in UK with a food bin issued 'contamination' warning - do not do this
A binman has issued an urgent appeal to householders about a common mistake that's "contaminating your bin". The self-described 'UK's No1 BINfluencer' has taken to TikTok to highlight an error many residents are making. The waste collection worker has pleaded with the public by saying: "If you're gonna use your bin, please take the food out of the packaging if you are going to throw it away."I know you left your wraps in the back of the cupboard, you forgot they were there. Now they're about two months out of date."Take it out of the plastic bag and put it in your food waste bin. I know it's gonna stink a little bit, but you are literally contaminating your bin by doing that."Take it out of the wrapper. You can get biodegradable bags. Some councils let you use paper bags."Whilst acknowledging that certain local authorities permit loose food waste, he cautioned that using appropriate bags prevents unpleasant odours and reduces the need for weekly bin cleaning. The TikToker also shared some peculiar observations about the festive season. He recalled: "Some people, when it was Christmas, wrapped up the turkey in foil."That's not food. Do not do it. So please, put food waste in a bag and then happy days. Everyone is happy. Your bin gets collected - and you haven't got to deal with the food waste for another week."In the comments, some people said that they could never put their food in a bin without a bag, with one commenter saying: "Isn’t that just common sense though? I always do it."But it seems not, with the number one bin man replying: "You would think so."Recently, we reported that a significant change is being put in place for rubbish collection in England, which will see four bins for all households, with the first steps for the new plan being rolled out as early as March.
