Man in his 20s is stabbed to death in 'very serious incident' near De Montfort University in Leicester - as 18-year-old male is arrested on suspicion of murder

A murder investigation has been launched after a man in his 20s was stabbed to death close to De Montfort University in Leicester. 

An 18-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

Police and paramedics rushed to a 'very serious incident' on Oxford Street at around 5pm yesterday following reports of a stabbing. 

It is understood that he collapsed in the street and was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he died a short time later.

A large police cordon is currently in place in the area and officers have launched an 'immediate investigation'. 

Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, Senior Investigating Officer, said: 'We are currently piecing together exactly what has occurred on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane between, what is reported, as two men involved in a confrontation.

'One of the men is believed to have been stabbed and has then collapsed in the street. Despite the best efforts of medical staff he died in hospital.

De Montfort University said it was offering support to students and staff who witnessed what happened.

A spokesperson for De Montfort said: 'We are aware of a very serious incident on our campus.

'We are working with Leicestershire Police as they launch an immediate investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened.

'We are offering direct support to students and staff who witnessed the incident.'

Leicestershire Police confirmed a number of road closures, including Oxford Street, Grange Street, Infirmary Square and Carlton Street.

A spokesman for the force said on Wednesday morning they were unable to confirm any further details about the incident at this time.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said several ambulances and an air ambulance were scrambled to the scene in Leicester last night. 

A spokesperson said: 'The caller reported a medical emergency. We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car, three crewed ambulances and a responder from the air ambulance was also in attendance.

'We transported one patient to Leicester Royal Infirmary.'

One woman who was walking in the area last night told the BBC: 'It is scary because even though I'm not currently in uni, it's so close to where you stay and it's sad to know this is what's happening within your area.

'It definitely doesn't make you feel safe. I just hope that whatever has happened, everyone is OK.'

Students remain in the dark about what happened on Oxford Street with several waking up this morning to find the police cordon in place. 

Prince Sandhu, 25, told Leicestershire Live: 'I live around that area and I've seen lots of police but I wasn't around last night when it happened so I don't know what's been going on.

'Nobody I've spoken to knows either. It seems like a lot of police.'

The incident is understood to have unfolded close to the Leicester Royal Infirmary with patients and staff warned of disruptions to their journeys. 

A spokesperson for the trust said in a Facebook post: 'Due to road closures currently in place near the hospital following an overnight incident, there will be traffic disruption in the area this morning.

'Please attend your appointment and allow extra time for your journey. Follow local diversions and police instructions. 

'If you are delayed, please contact your clinic or department where possible.'

Bus routes in the area have also been placed on diversion due to the police cordon. 

According to the operator First Bus, the 88, 88A and 88E inbound services are following an adjusted route.
