A hands-free soap dispenser promises cleaner kitchens, simple refilling and weeks of battery life in a surprisingly polished design

I'm one of those people who washes his hands quite obsessively. Especially in the kitchen. And an electric soap dispenser has to be the most hygienic way to go about it.

No more picking up a soggy bar of soap, no more prodding a dispenser on a bottle, just wave your hand beneath it and a dollop of hand wash is ready to work in.

I've lived with quite a few of these gadgets over the years, I'm quite fond of them, but I've had varying degrees of success. The ones I bought from Temu were hopeless, quelle surprise, and some of the other cheap and cheerful ones I've bought really haven't lasted long.

But then a company called Eko got in touch, with news of a smart soap dispenser that looked like it might go the distance, and not turn into an expensive ornament within a couple of weeks.

However, I'm not exaggerating here, it is absolutely brilliant. And it's brilliant in its simplicity, let alone its functionality.

You can adjust the amount of soap that's being dispensed, but that's about the only control you have to bother with. And, trust me, you'll find a dosage you're happy with and you'll probably never touch it again.

It holds 400ml of liquid soap (cheap supermarket stuff is fine) and it charges off USB. The battery lasts for weeks, even under heavy use.

Filling it is a doddle, there's a clear window to help you see how much soap is left, and there's even a self cleaning mode to rinse it out between refills.

I wish it was cheaper, it's a shame it'll be outside the budget for most people, because every home should have at least one of these.

But the alternatives really are few and far between. I know this because I've owned them and I've binned them.

The Eko soap dispenser not only works solidly every time, and looks smart in your kitchen or bathroom, but it never misfires like some of the cheaper units. The battery life's great, it's completely waterproof, and the USB charging base is magnetic.

In every way it really needs to be, it's a perfect performer. I absolutely love it. And now I want one in both my bathrooms. And the utility room. I'd better start saving.
