Two schoolgirls and an elderly dog walker struck by LIGHTNING during wild storms

Two schoolgirls and an elderly dog walker have been rushed to hospital after being struck by lightning during wild thunderstorms.

The teenage girls were at a high school in Mount Helena, 35km east of Perth, when they were struck about 10.10am on Thursday.

Both were treated by paramedics before being taken to nearby hospitals.

Meanwhile, a man in his 70s was walking his dog in Karrinyup when he was struck by lightning about 9.30am and suffered serious injuries.

He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital.

The wild weather has left thousands without power on Thursday morning, as Perth received its first major deluge of the year.

Almost 3,000 people temporarily lost power in Balga and Hamersley, with Hamilton Hill, Innaloo, Parmelia and Palmyra also experiencing outages.

Train lines were also impacted across the city, with dozens of services cancelled.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said isolated thunderstorms had formed early on Thursday, driven by a deepening west coast trough.

'(The thunderstorms have been) moving across land and the Perth Metro area around 6am,' they told PerthNow

'Little rainfall has been recorded so far, with Jandakot around the highest with 0.8mm as of 8am.'
