It was bound to happen. With all the momentum and universal praise, Geese were destined to win their first industry award. Who would've thought it would be a BRIT Award? The Brooklyn indie rockers won International Group Of The Year tonight, and drummer Max Bassin accepted the award from Cat Burns at Manchester's Co-op Live, saying, “Free Palestine, fuck ICE, R.I.P. Mani, let's go Geese!” The speech was censored on ITV, but Geese were ready with video from the audience to post on socials before the show was over. The BRITs also posted the uncensored speech on YouTube.
During the show Gary "Mani" Mounfield had received a tribute from his friend Tim Burgess of the Charlatans at the beginning of the In Memoriam segment. The legendary Madchester bassist of the Stone Roses and later Primal Scream passed away last fall.
Geese were up against HAIM, HUNTR/X, Tame Impala, and Turnstile for International Group Of The Year. The band just completed a Japan run where Cameron Winter and Mac DeMarco visited city pop legend Haruomi Hosono and also sang his song "Tokio Rush" at karaoke. Geese dropped their live album Geese: Live At Third Man Records yesterday and, as you probably saw, they did a Tiny Desk Concert earlier this month.
On the red carpet, Bassin broke down his fit: all Eckhaus Latta except the boots, which he is gatekeeping. While doing press after accepting his trophy, the drummer said his bandmates were "out escapading" and he got to meet Oasis' Noel Gallagher, who won this year's Songwriter Of The Year award even though he hasn't released any songs since 2023. He met Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie too.
