Mooney back with Down after retirement U-turn

Caolan Mooney has reversed his decision to retire from Down duty, RTÉ Sport understands. The RGU Downpatrick player came off the bench to score two points in the county's narrow All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final defeat to Galway last season, and in the aftermath Mooney indicated that his time in red and black had come to an end. "A journey that started in 2011 when I made my debut for Down GAA. It's coming to an end in 2025," the former AFL player posted in the aftermath of the loss. "Too much time on the physio beds this last two years played its part as does the essence of time. The body can only take so much." However, he is believed to have now returned to Conor Laverty’s squad as their attention turns to championship matters and an Ulster opener against Donegal on 26 April. The Mourne County can still be caught in the promotion race in Division 3, but it would it require the Ulster side to lost their two final games, two of Wexford, Clare or Westmeath to win both their final games and their scoring difference to be the worst of the three teams that would end up on 10 points. Liam Kerr is another recent returnee to the Down squad after a year out with key player Danny Magill hoping to be back in contention in time for championship following a cruciate injury.
