The rapid growth of Japanese pop culture scene in the UAE

Japan has been known for its infamous technology, cars, food, culture as well entertainment and pop culture that being a major part of many people lives around the world including in the UAE.Loy Pinheiro, show director of MEFCC and Ayman Akaily, Lead Content Manager at MEFCC share their thoughts about the major impact of Japanese anime and pop culture in the UAE over many years.“Japanese anime and pop culture content have seen remarkable growth in popularity across the Middle East, particularly in the UAE, due to several key factors,” said Pinheiro. “The impact on our community has been profound. We’ve come a long way since Captain Majid (known globally as Captain Tsubasa) aired on Dubai’s Channel 33 in the 1990s – which is one of my fondest memories as a third culture kid growing up in Dubai. Today, anime has become a cultural bridge, connecting fans across nationalities and fostering a real sense of belonging”.“Firstly, I believe the universal themes and storytelling in anime resonate deeply with audiences of all ages. Whether it’s the importance of friendship, family, and teamwork in Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, the power of perseverance in Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto, or the exploration of moral dilemmas in Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan, anime offers narratives that transcend cultural boundaries. Additionally, the UAE’s wonderfully diverse, multicultural environment has fostered an openness to global entertainment, making anime and manga accessible across our local community.”.“The rise of streaming platforms such as Netflix, Crunchyroll, Yango, and YouTube has also played a pivotal role in bringing anime to the forefront. These platforms have made it easier for fans to access official subtitled and dubbed content, breaking language barriers and expanding the reach of Japanese pop culture. Furthermore, the UAE’s strong focus on technology and digital media has amplified the visibility of anime through social media platforms, where various fan communities actively share opinions on anime titles they’re watching, cosplay, and fan art”.“Events like the Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC) in Abu Dhabi and FNDM Dubai have provided a platform for this growing fanbase to celebrate their passion, while also encouraging creativity and collector culture through cosplay, fan art, storytelling, and bringing iconic Japanese voice actors to connect with their fans. This has led to the emergence of local creators inspired by Japanese anime, contributing to the UAE’s growing creative economy. For these fans, myself included, anime has become more than just entertainment – it’s a lifestyle”.“The impact is also economic. The popularity of anime has spurred demand for related industries, including gaming, toys, trading cards, merchandise, and events, contributing to the UAE’s creative economy. As fans and creators continue to engage with Japanese pop culture, I expect to see even more cross-cultural collaboration and innovation in this space in the future,” he added.About his thoughts on the rising demand for anime, manga, and cosplay programming at MEFCC and other entertainment events around the region, Pinheiro said:” The rising demand for anime, manga, and cosplay programming at our events is a testament to the region’s evolving entertainment landscape. Fans are no longer passive consumers; they are active participants who want immersive experiences that allow them to connect with their favorite characters, stories, and creators. This shift reflects the growing influence of Japanese pop culture as a mainstream phenomenon in the Middle East”.“Cosplay, in particular, has become a cornerstone of our community and how we engage with fans. I’m privileged to have met and exchanged ideas with so many exceptionally talented cosplayers across the region. Cosplay is not just about dressing up – it’s a form of artistic expression that showcases creativity, craftsmanship, and dedication”.“The demand for manga and anime programming also highlights the appetite for deeper cultural exploration, as fans seek to connect with their favorite voice actors or creators, and better understand the origins and nuances of Japanese storytelling”.“Events like MEFCC and FNDM Dubai have responded to this demand by curating specialized programming, including panels, workshops, and meet-and-greets with legendary Japanese mangaka, voice actors, and artists. This not only enriches the fan experience but also positions the UAE as a hub for global pop culture. Our success with such programming underscores the importance of catering to new interests and evolving with our fanbase, while fostering a true sense of community,” he added.About the impact of Japanese anime and pop-culture on fan trends and the creators in the UAE, Akaily said:” Japanese anime and pop culture have had a profound and transformative impact on this region, unlocking a vast spectrum of imagination, fostering artistic beauty, and creating a shared emotional language that bridges cultures. Despite geographical distances, storytelling has connected people in deeply meaningful ways”. “For many fans in the UAE, anime has been more than just entertainment – it has served as a gateway to creativity. It has inspired individuals to explore new artistic pursuits, whether through drawing, sewing their first cosplay, writing original stories, composing music, or even dreaming of creating their own worlds. The themes of resilience, friendship, identity, and hope found in anime resonate deeply, motivating fans to evolve into creators themselves”. “What makes this influence particularly remarkable is its ability to seamlessly bridge cultures. Japanese storytelling has met Middle Eastern creativity, resulting in the emergence of original art styles, locally inspired characters, and creators who proudly blend global influences with their unique voices. This cultural exchange has fostered vibrant communities, bringing together superfans, newcomers, families, and friends to celebrate hobbies that were once considered niche. From parents introducing their children to Studio Ghibli films to cosplayers bringing iconic characters like the Naruto villains to life, anime has become a shared communal experience that transcends language, age, and backgrounds, fostering mutual appreciation and respect”.“This emotional connection has translated into tangible success. Platforms like the World Cosplay Summit have showcased the region’s talent, with Team UAE achieving a top-10 global ranking in costume-making worldwide last year. Additionally, industry-leading Japanese brands such as Bandai Namco, Kinokuniya, Bushiroad, and others are actively contributing to this dynamic landscape, further solidifying the region’s role in the global anime and pop culture scene,” he added.About the expectations for MEFCC 2026 in terms of Japanese anime and pop-culture creativity by the fans at the event, Pinheiro said:” Fans attending MEFCC 2026 can expect an unparalleled celebration of Japanese anime and pop-culture. The event is set to feature a diverse lineup of celebrity guests, activities, and entertainment tailored to our growing community in the region. To give you a sneak peek – highlights include a brand-new show feature focused on celebrating Otaku culture, interactive panels with legendary Japanese voice actors coming to the UAE for the very first time, and high-octane J-Pop music and dance performances”.“This year’s MEFCC cosplay competition is expected to take center stage, showcasing the incredible talent and creativity of fans across the region. Additionally, fans can look forward to themed merchandise, and collaborations with Japanese brands and studios. MEFCC 2026 will also emphasize community-building via our countless show activities, creating a space where anime enthusiasts can share their passion, connect with like-minded individuals, and most importantly – find a place where they belong and make friends for life,” Pinheiro added.“For Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC) 2026, I anticipate an extraordinary display of creativity that is deeply personal, emotionally resonant, and proudly expressive,” said Akaily.“Each year, fans return not only with improved artistic skills and more elaborate cosplay but also with greater confidence and compelling stories they are eager to share. The Otaku District will serve as the epicenter of this creativity – a space where anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture aesthetics converge and blend with other Asian influences, such as K-Pop and role-playing dances (RPDs). Fans will not only celebrate their love for Japanese intellectual properties but will also reinterpret them through cosplay, idol dance performances, voice acting duels, and interactive quizzes. This fusion of global influence and regional identity transforms fandom into a cultural phenomenon”.“In Artist Alley, the evolution from fan to creator will be on full display. Artists inspired by manga storytelling and anime visuals will showcase original works, illustrations, and hybrid art styles that merge Japanese influences with their own narratives. MEFCC provides these creators with a platform to share their stories and gain visibility, empowering them to transition from admirers to contributors within the creative ecosystem”.“The Festival Plaza will bring this creativity to life through dynamic performances and immersive experiences. From the highly anticipated cosplay competition and live dance showcases to music inspired by J-pop and a headlining J-Rock act from Japan, this space will be filled with moments that connect fans not just through entertainment but through shared passion and creativity”.“The presence of Japanese voice actors will elevate the experience to a new level. Meeting the voices behind iconic characters from series such as Naruto, Bleach, Demon Slayer, One Piece, and Attack on Titan offers fans a deeply personal connection to the craft of storytelling and performance. For many, these interactions spark aspirations of pursuing creative careers in voice acting, storytelling, or other artistic fields”.“Together, these elements will transform MEFCC 2026 into more than just an event – it will become a creative journey. Fans will move from admiration to expression, from audience to artist, celebrating how Japanese anime and pop culture continue to inspire creativity, bridge cultures, and empower individuals to share their own stories with the world,” he added.
