West Brom draw ‘feels like a loss’, says Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder admitted their 1-1 home draw with West Brom felt “like a loss”.

West Brom defender George Campbell turned Gustavo Hamer’s cross into his own net to gift United the lead in the 53rd minute, but he atoned in style seven minutes from time with a stunning long-range strike to snatch a vital point for his side.

The draw moved the Baggies out of the bottom three by a point as the Blades’ hopes of moving into play-off contention suffered a setback.

Wilder said: “We were very loose in the first half. It was a stop and start sort of game. We never connected, too many heavy touches and we were forcing play.

“West Brom sat off us and we had to find a way to break them down. It’s tough when there are a lot of bodies to get through, but we lacked urgency.

“In the second half, West Brom were more aggressive in their press and we were negative in too many situations. We went backwards and sideways so we ended up trying to play forward from deeper positions.

“We showed a little bit of quality and got that first goal, but we need to have enough about us to see it out or go and get that second goal. We’ve missed too many big chances.

“The goal we conceded is a really poor one. We’ve not done enough to stop the shot and they end up scoring from a speculative effort.

“It’s the business end of the season and you need your best performances. West Brom deserved the point. If I was their manager I would have been disappointed if we didn’t come away with anything.

“It feels like a loss today and we have to accept that. We were not at our best and we didn’t find a way to win the game, which is a quality you need if you want to be around the top of the division come the end of the

season.”

West Brom interim manager James Morrison said his side have “something to build on” following the late equaliser.

Morrison said: “In the first half, we were too passive and we didn’t do enough to create chances. We addressed it at half-time and agreed we needed to be more aggressive.

“When you come to Bramall Lane, you need to be ruthless and take your chances when they come. Isaac (Price) had a big chance early in the second half and if he had scored that it would’ve given us something to hold on to.

“I’ve been impressed with George and the own goal was unlucky, so it’s pleasing to see the way he reacted. I asked my players to be patient around the box so I have to say I was very surprised when he found the net from

there.

“We were solid, I feel like they didn’t threaten us too much up until the goal. After that we had to open up and they had a few chances, but United have been very good here of late so I’m happy we got the point.

“I said a few things last week that I probably shouldn’t have, but I spoke with my heart. We’ve had a good week since then and I saw a reaction today.

“This gives us something to build on but we have to try and keep level-headed. We know we still have 10 more massive games to go.”
