‘Weapons’ Prequel Adds ‘Godzilla’ Scribe Zach Shields to Write With Zach Cregger

Gladys, the breakout character from ‘s , is ready to steal the whole show.

Cregger and screenwriter Zach Shields, known for his work on the franchise, are penning the script for a planned prequel feature for the filmmaker’s 2025 horror hit. Gladys is the working title for the project that is in development at .

Centering on a group of children who go missing in the middle of the night, Weapons hit theaters in August from and collected $270 million at the global box office. The cast included Julia Garner, Josh Brolin and , with the latter earning the best supporting actress Oscar for her role as Aunt Gladys.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Cregger was mulling a prequel movie to focus on the origin story of Aunt Gladys’ arrival to town.

“Zach has a map of what he would like to do,” Madigan told THR late last year about a possible prequel. “It would be such a blast, and it would be really great if we could revisit her in some way. I’m excited about that possibility.”

Cregger, who is also known for directing Barbarian and is working on Resident Evil for Sony, returns as a producer for the prequel alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon. Cregger is represented by CAA, Artists First and Karl Austen and Michael Auerbach.

Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser and Zach Cherry star in Resident Evil, with the film that reboots the video game property set to hit theaters Sept. 18.

Shields recently worked on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire for Warner Bros. and Legendary. His previous credits include Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Universal’s Krampus. Shields is repped by Range Media Partners and Hirsch Wallerstein.
