Hongkongers can expect more showers with some thunderstorms on Sunday, the weather forecaster has said, after widespread downpours on Saturday triggered an amber warning and left some hikers requiring rescue.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the amber rainstorm warning, the lowest in a three-tier system, at 11am. Rain was particularly heavy in Tai Po district, it said.
Rescuers were called out after several hikers got into trouble in the deluge. Police said they received a call from an elderly couple hiking on Tai To Yan, a challenging ridge in Tai Po, at 11.47am.
The pair – a 76-year-old man surnamed Chu and his 68-year-old wife surnamed Wong – said they lost their way on the ridge when the weather turned bad.
Firefighters eventually brought the pair, who were uninjured, to safety.
About 45 minutes later, at 12.31pm, the force received a report from three hikers in Southern district who also said they had lost their way.
