Why watch literally anything else when you could be watching Heat? Michael Mann's legendary crime thriller, headlined by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino – respectively a highly-skilled robber and a seasoned albeit somewhat weary detective – is a masterclass in atmosphere, in mood. Sprawling out over its 170-minute runtime, it slowly and meticulously constructs the circling trajectory of its two players, laying a trap so ominous in its fate that it feels almost like a tragic romance. It's so good, so slick, so sexy. You can watch Heat on Disney+.

This one isn't an oldie, but boy are we glad to see it: Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin, set on a fictional island off the coast of Ireland, already feels like an immutable classic. The director's signature tragicomic leanings are beautifully bittersweet here, telling a story of two lifelong best friends and drinking pals on Inisherin – played by Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, and also Colin Farrell's very sad and expressive eyebrows – who fall out when the former suddenly ends their relationship.
What follows seems to traverse the whole spectrum of human emotion: heartbreak, absurdity, rage, loneliness, some bizarrely warranted laughter. McDonagh was on top form with this, and so were his stellar cast: plus, if you ever need knitwear inspo, Banshees is your guy. You can watch The Banshees of Inisherin on Disney+.
