‘Everything is Crab’ Turns Animal Evolution Into Roguelike Action

Everything is Crab is a roguelike where you start off as a blob that you can evolve into whatever you need to survive.

There is a working theory out there that everything eventually can evolve into crabs. I am not sure where on the internet this started, but it’s something even I have heard of despite not knowing much about evolution or how creatures could simply become something else. This game takes that idea and builds some roguelike action around it.

Everything is Crab is an animal evolution roguelite where you start off by mixing a bit of DNA to get your starting blob. From there, you must scavenge around, hunting other creatures so that you can gain enough food to evolve. Evolving requires you to pick from one of three options each time, some with more positives then others. You can end up growing wings, antlers, and even scales.

When I played a demo at DreamHack, I was able to fight off enemies with antlers and even get other creatures to fight alongside me if I started attacking and they were within range. I tended to evolve in a way that could sustain life, often picking options that allowed me to get more health or regenerate while looking to gain a bit more movement speed as well.

There are milestones to watch out for when it comes to evolution – specifically in terms of bosses. These bosses do make a fence all around the area, so you are stuck trying to actually defeat them when they show. They have evolved themselves, so they are different on every run.

While playing Everything is Crab, I really liked how much was going on. From fighting enemies to grabbing different foods that appear to watching out that you don’t get too wet or to dry, there was just a lot to keep track of and think about. It’s a lot to manage while changing your shape and trying to pick the best ways to evolve before a boss attacks you.

Everything is Crab is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
